Black History Month pt. 4

This is our last week of Black History Month.  I hope you enjoyed seeing the different artwork the kids created celebrating the heritage of African-American people.  We are going to finish up by showcasing 3rd grade and 4th grade!  Today, 3rd grade put on an excellent performance for our Black History Musical, "Gotta Be Jazz". They did an awesome job and they also created artwork for the gym.  As a review of what we learned in the first quarter, the students created "jazz pianos" by using lines patterns and color. I really like how they turned out!

And finally, 4th grade created African pinch pots and decorated them with a design when they dried. We used Crayola Air-dry Terra Cotta Clay. Try it out at home, you'll love it! Enjoy!

Black History Month Pt.3

Hello! We are more than half-way through our celebration of Black History Month in the art room! This week I am showcasing 2nd grade! We talked about the people of Africa and their decorative, hand-made jewelry. We then made Samburu Necklaces! The Samburu people made necklaces out of beads threaded into very intricate patterns. Because I do not want the janitorial staff to start giving me the side-eye, we opted to use markers to create beautiful patterns on paper plates! We took pictures wearing our necklaces and displayed them in the hallway. They were a hit among students and teachers! Below are a few to enjoy! More will be posted on Artsonia soon. Next week, we will finish off Black History Month with 3rd and 4th grade!

Black History Month Pt. 2

It's the end of the second week of Black History Month, and we have had a great time creating things inspired by some of our African roots! Last week, we took a look at what kindergarten created after reading the book, "We Went on Safari".  We also read the book in 1st grade.  We concentrated on the people of the book.  We looked at the way they were dressed and we discussed how some people in Africa carried baskets and bowls on their heads.  I demonstrated for the class as they watched in amazement at Ms. Fulton's poise and grace! I really enjoyed how they came out and they are a hit in the hallway.  We've been getting compliments from our Lincoln Art Institute patrons.  Here are a few to look at now.  More will be posted on Artsonia (www.artsonia.com)  in the upcoming weeks.  It only gets better from here, folks! Happy Black History Month Pt.1

Happy Black History Month everyone! We celebrated in art class a little early so we could adorn our hallway with artwork inspired by African influences!  In some classes, we also celebrated Valentine's Day with art inspired by love! I can't wait to post those next week!  I had a blast creating with the kids and I hope they learned a little about African heritage and had fun doing it.  In the following posts I am going to post projects grade by grade until the end of the month.  Beginning with kindergarten, we read the book, "We All Went on Safari" by Laurie Krebs.  We talked about the animals featured in the book, and then we drew lions.  Here are a few to start.  Stay tuned to www.artsonia.com for the rest of the lions as well as other artwork!
